A Moment Of Silence In Schools Essays - Prayer, School Prayer A 'Moment of Silence' in Schools In 1962 the Supreme Court decided that public schools did not have the power to authorize school prayer. This decision made public school in the U.S. more atheistic than many European nations. For example, crosses still hang on the classroom walls in Poland, and the Ten Commandments are displayed in Hungary. There are prayers held at the beginning of legislative and judicial sessions and every President has mentioned a divine power in his inaugural speech. In keeping with a spirit of religious freedom as stated in the First Amendment, there is no reason why students should not be allowed to have a moment of silence during the school day when they can pray or do as they choose. The case Engel v. Vitale in 1962 decided that school prayer is unconstitutional. With this case, it was pointed out that the students were to "voluntarily" recite the following prayer: "Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers, and our country." The court ruled that this rule was unconstitutional according to the First Amendment's "establishment clause," which states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." In response to the Engel v. Vitale case some schools adopted a "moment of silence." In 1963, another case was brought before the court dealing with school prayer, Abington School District v. Schempp. The Schempp family challenged a law in Pennsylvania requiring the students to say ten verses of the Bible before school. These readings from the Bible were declared unconstitutional. Members of the board felt reading the Bible would give the children more moral values. The Schempp family strongly disagreed. Members of Congress attempted to find a compromise. From this effort came the adoption of the moment of silence, which is guaranteed by the First Amendment's "Free Exercise" clause. In addition, the guards facilitated a quick and painful death by ensuring that while nailing the victim, the nails went through major bones on the legs, tibia and fibula, to break them thereby weakening the functioning of the body. Some of the texts also suggest that, due to the weakness of the palm flesh to sustain the weight of the body, there is a logical reason to believe that the nails on the hands were driven through the radius and the ulna, which are the two major bones that connect the palms to the elbow joints. Otherwise, the only other possibility was to increase support by tying the nailed hands to the cross (Tzaferis, 1985). It is also evident that Roman executioners hastened the death of the victim by spearing him in the chest. One of the major historical and biblical figures to die in the hands of Roman executioners through crucifixion was Jesus, who was crucified for treason. Jesus was perceived as a threat to the leadership of the roman emperor, Tiberius Caesar, by claiming that he was the king of the Jews and that there was another greater kingdom than the Roman empire, which belonged to his father. He was also accused of blasphemy due to his claims that he was the son of God yet he was a man with flesh and blood and therefore no different from other humans (Hengel, 1989). According to Jewish beliefs, crucified persons were not supposed to remain on the cross on the Sabbath day, which is equivalent to Saturday on the Gregorian calendar, and therefore it had been ordered that all the people crucified together with Jesus had to have their legs broken so as to ensure that they died on that very day. Lo que viene a clarificarnos este articulo, en toda regla, es que el modelo biomedico se orienta exclusivamente a la practica asistencial, que se orienta a la enfermedad y deja a un lado el modelo holistico, el cual se centra en todos los aspectos de la persona. Como el sistema sanitario actual se centra en el modelo biomedico, su objetivo final y prioritario es buscar el tratamiento y la curacion de la enfermedad. Lo que conseguimos con esto, es centrarnos en los aspectos fisicos ignorando al paciente, ya que se deja a un lado toda comunicacion con el. Tenemos que tener claro que a la hora de contactar con un paciente, no solo nos ha de importar la causa fisica o las anomalias bioquimicas para el diagnostico de la enfermedad, sino que el estilo de vida de la persona y su susceptibilidad biologica influyen en una futura enfermedad, asi como el entorno que nos rodea, la sociedad en si, el medio natural donde yace, etc. La enfermera es la que cuida de la persona en todas sus dimensiones, comunicandose con el, entendiendo sus preocupaciones, preguntandole por su forma de vivir para asi ayudar a que tome sus propias decisiones y recupere por tanto, su autonomia para mejorar o recuperar su salud. Es verdad que los profesionales medicos son mas habiles para conocer y explicar las razones de las enfermedades, pero no son habiles para aplicar habitualmente la prevencion y la promocion de la salud para conservar y mejorar la salud de la persona y en general, de la comunidadcosa que si hacen o deberian hacer los profesionales de enfermeria. Los profesionales de enfermeria deben promocionar la salud, pero deben hacerlo colaborando con la poblacion, pero no trabajando para ella. Para obtener la promocion de salud se debe estimular, motivar, orientar a los lideres informales para que la poblacion desarrolle sus propias habilidades para con su salud. Sabemos que las enfermedades dependen de los grupos sociales en las que se de, es decir, no es lo mismo una enfermedad tratada en un pais desarrollado que en un pais en vias de desarrollo. De todas formas, nunca debemos aislar la enfermedad de la persona que esta enferma y sin lugar a dudas el modelo actual del sistema sanitario se centra solo en la enfermedad y se olvida totalmente del paciente, que en muchas ocasiones ayuda incluso al diagnostico y a su curacion. Otro factor que afecta al ser humano es el entorno, es decir, todo aquello que le rodea. Es el ser humano el que se debe adaptar al medio natural en el que vive y esto se debe hacer mediante la socializacion y el aprendizaje y para ello se debe contar con la ayuda de la familia, puesto que es un agente de salud potencial, porque es la familia la que ayuda a desenvolvernos en la sociedad ante cualquier tipo de problema, sea de salud o no. Por lo tanto, las personas dependemos de nuestra familia para adoptar un estilo de vida y unas formas de enfrentarnos a la enfermedad que pueden ser buenas o malas. Naturalmente, para eso estan los profesionales de la salud, para promocionar un estilo de vida sano y una manera de enfrentarse a la enfermedad adecuada para preservar o mejorar asi la salud. Como resultado, habra que potenciar las buenas actuaciones en la familia para conseguir una serie de objetivos que ayuden a la socializacion y al aprendizaje de los hijos y que como consecuencia esto s lo hagan con las futuras generaciones. Quizas el papel de enfermeria se ha ido alejando de lo que realmente es, puesto que lo que se debe hacer no es lo que realmente se hace. Se debe cuidar tanto a las personas sanas como a las enfermas para educar en salud, para que ademas, se reconozca a los profesionales de enfermeria por el cuidado de la salud y no exclusivamente por el cuidado de la enfermedad. Tambien se debe garantizar a la poblacion de que seran atendidos por el profesional adecuado y de forma personalizada porque cada persona es diferente, por lo tanto sus cuidados deben ser distintos. Y ademas, se debe garantizar la ayuda para que las personas que han mermado una de sus capacidades por cualquier tipo de enfermedad, vuelvan a recuperarla para asi poder conseguir la autonomia que toda persona debe poseer. Como el sistema sanitario se ha vuelto incapaz de realizar los cuidados y las atenciones especificas para la poblacion, los servicios sanitarios necesitan incorporar nuevas ideas y visiones para afrontar los objetivos que se deben cumplir y que ya existian. Para ello, nos ayudaremos de las construcciones socio-culturales de cada comunidad para asi integrarlos en la participacion para la obtencion de salud y su conservacion. En base a todo lo escrito antes, para un correcto entendimiento en el que las enfermeras hagan lo que deben de hacer, deberiamos recuperar viejas ideas que se centren en todos los ambitos del paciente como hacen muchas medicinas tradicionales, por ejemplo el Ayurveda, que es una medicina tradicional tipica de la India. El Ayurveda es un sistema holistico en el que sus objetivos son tener en cuenta tanto la mente, las emociones y la constitucion fisica del paciente. No obstante, el modelo que persiste actualmente en occidente es todo lo contrario, pues se centra en curar la enfermedad dejando actuar al paciente de forma pasiva. El Ayurveda se centra en 5 elementos fundamentales como son el aire, la tierra, el eter, el fuego y el agua que conforman las tres Doshas (Kappa, Vata y Pitta), segà ºn vayamos teniendo desequilibrios en estas Doshas, el Ayurveda nos aconseja una serie de alimentos sanos para asi mantener una dieta sana y equilibrada que acompaà ±ada de ejercicio fisico, que equilibra mente y cuerpo, como la yoga, podamos asi mantener un estilo de vida sano orientado a la conservacion o la mejora de la salud. Sabemos ademas, que la mente ejerce mucho poder sobre nuestro cuerpo por lo que Mens sana in corpore sano tal y como dijo un celebre poeta romano llamado Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis, el c ual instruia que se debia dejar las cosas vanas a un lado e implorar a los dioses por una salud integral de la mente, el cuerpo y el alma. Por lo tanto, se puede llegar a la conclusion de que si mantenemos nuestra mente sana, mantendremos nuestro cuerpo sano y por tanto nuestra salud sera la adecuada. Tanto el ejercicio fisico, como una mente sana y un estilo de vida correcto, ayudaran a sentirnos bien, para poder asi mejorar o mantener nuestra salud. En resumidas cuentas, todo lo que conforma nuestro cuerpo es muy importante, puesto que debemos tener en cuenta las emociones, la mente y la constitucion fisica a la hora de hablar con un paciente, ya que no solo las anomalias bioquimicas importan, sino que tambien es importante lo que piensa el paciente o aquel rasgo subjetivo de la enfermedad que solo el puede expresarnos. Todo profesional de la salud, debe centrarse en el modelo holistico, para asi atender a todas la dimensiones que conforman la persona y como ejemplo, la medicina ayurvedica es bastante completa. Con este articulo, queda bastante claro cual debe ser la mision de cualquier personal sanitario, pero en concreto el del profesional de enfermeria. Ademas, esta muy bien estructurado ya que en ningà ºn momento la tesis se contradice y el objetivo del articulo queda bastante evidente.

Jem and Scout’s Transformation

Gem and Scout's Transformation Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird America, while being the greatest nation, has had its fair share of problems. Governmental Issues, commerce, making money, and also civil rights. The Issue of the treatment of African Americans is one of the larger, spanning almost two hundred and fifty years of American history. In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, this issue is one of the main topics. In the novel, Gem and Scout learn lessons in morality, being quick to judge, but also keeping strong fundamental values.Our main characters experience events causing them to shift their views on morality. In the beginning of the book, Scout gets Into fights and Is always quick to retaliate. By the end of the book however she learns that sometimes you must hold your head up high and walk away, This Is shown best by Tactics who even when he gets spitted on in public, still walks away without fighting. This is also shown when Gem breaks down and vandalizes Mrs.. Double's f ront yard after her comments about them.He learns that all actions have consequences and that if you would not have done them in the first place, you would eve been able to avoid them all together. The biggest moral lessons they learn is the sinfulness of killing a mockingbird. Mockingbirds do nothing but create sweet music, they don't harm anyone, and It would be a sin to kill one. This relates to Tom Robinson because he is a mockingbird in the sense that he didn't do anything wrong but he is still being punished. Miss Maude says, â€Å"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy†¦ Sing their hearts out for us.That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird† (119). This quote helps explain totes and Scout the importance of accepting others and not hurting those who have done nothing wrong, some of the key themes of the book. These events shape how Gem and Scout perceive the world and alter their opinions about people and Macomb. Gem and Scout learn other important lessons, too. The Finch kids learn from Tactics that you can't be quick to judge others. As children, they hear rumors and make up things about Boo Raddled. Some of these include eating kittens and squirrels.One night, Gem, Scout, and Dill try ND communicate with him by looking through his window but when they try and escape quickly, they get shot at and Gem looses his pants on the fence. When Gem returns retrieve his ripped pants he finds them gently folded and sewed. Events Like this shape how they see the Reader's as not as evil but possibly they just like to be secluded. At then end of the book the children see Arthur, or Boo Raddled, as their protector when he saves them from Bob Lowell. Tactics says, â€Å"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view †¦ Until you limb into his skin and walk around in it† (39). This quote by Tactics really drives in Tactics' morality and how his teachings and overall behavior Influe nce not only his children, but the others In the town like the African American community. It helps the kids really realize that everybody is different and to understand people, you must consider all things from their prospective. Gem and Scout still have stayed the same in some ways. Although the kids have gone through many transformations and have matured rapidly, they have still stayed the same in some regards.Gem is still the example of this is when Scout finds gum in the tree and Gem yells at her to spit it out immediately. Scout says, â€Å"Gem had acquired an alien set of values†¦ Several times he went as far as to tell me what to do† (153). This quote shows how as Gem grows up, he still remains protective of his little sister. He only wants what's best for her NAS sometimes she takes it harshly, when really he is Just trying to keep her safe. Scout is still the innocent little girl who likes to play games and role play.Overall, they haven't hanged in a sense of t heir childlike behavior but instead their look on the world has changed drastically. Gem and Scout have gone through many changes learning empathy and understanding others and have also remained normal kids. They managed to grasp very adult ideas as young children, ideas some adults cannot grasp. Would it be better to have morally strong children who grow not only physically, but also mature mentally, and know the right things to do or would it be better to have children who never grow mentally and live their lives buying into immature and irrational prejudices?

Ancient Egyptian Cuisine and Food Habits Among the ancient civilizations, Egyptians enjoyed better foods than most did, thanks to the presence of the Nile River flowing through most of settled  Egypt, fertilizing the land with periodic flooding and providing a source of water for irrigating crops and watering livestock. The proximity of Egypt to the Middle East made trade easy, and hence Egypt enjoyed foodstuffs from foreign countries as well, and their cuisine was heavily influenced by outside eating habits.   The diet of the ancient Egyptians depended on their social position and wealth. Tomb paintings, medical treatises, and archaeology reveal a variety of foods. Peasants and slaves would, of course, eat a limited diet, including the staples of bread and beer, complemented by dates, vegetables, and pickled and salted fish, but the wealthy had a much larger range to choose from. For wealthy Egyptians, available food choices were easily as broad as they are for many people in the modern world.   Grains Barley, spelt,  or emmer wheat provided the basic material for bread, which was leavened by sourdough or yeast. Grains were mashed and fermented for beer, which was not so much a recreational drink as a means of creating a safe beverage from river waters that were not always clean. Ancient Egyptians consumed a great deal of beer, mostly brewed from barley.   The annual flooding of plains alongside the Nile and other rivers made the soils quite fertile for growing grain crops, and the rivers themselves were channeled with irrigation ditches to water crops and sustain domestic animals. In ancient times, the Nile River Valley, especially the upper delta region, was by no means a desert landscape.   Wine Grapes were grown for wine. Grape cultivation was adopted from other parts of the Mediterranean in about 3,000 BCE, with Egyptians modifying practices to their local climate. Shade structures were commonly used, for example, to protect grapes from the intense Egyptian sun. Ancient Egyptian wines were primarily reds and were probably used mostly for ceremonial purposes for the upper classes. Scenes carved in ancient pyramids and temples show scenes of wine-making. For common people, beer was a more typical drink.   Fruit and Vegetables Vegetables cultivated and consumed by ancient Egyptians included onions, leeks, garlic, and lettuce. Legumes included lupines, chickpeas, broad beans, and lentils. Fruit included melon, fig, date, palm coconut, apple, and pomegranate. The carob was used medicinally and, perhaps, for food. Animal Protein Animal protein was a less common food for ancient Egyptians than it is for most modern consumers. Hunting was somewhat rare, though it was pursued by commoners for sustenance and by the wealthy for sport.  Domesticated animals, including oxen, sheep, goats, and swine, provided dairy products, meat, and by-products, with blood from sacrificial animals used for blood sausages, and beef and pork fat used for cooking. Pigs, sheep, and goats provided most meat consumed; beef was considerably more expensive and was consumed by commoners only for celebratory or ritual meals. Beef was eaten more regularly by royalty.   Fish caught in the Nile River provided an important source of protein for poor people and was eaten less frequently by the wealthy, who had greater access to domesticated pigs, sheep, and goats.   There is also evidence the poorer Egyptians consumed rodents, such as mice and hedgehogs, in recipes calling for them to be baked. Geese, ducks, quail, pigeons, and pelicans were available as fowl, and their eggs were also eaten. Goose fat was also used for cooking. Chickens, however, seem to have not been present in ancient Egypt until the 4th or 5th centuries BCE.   Oils and Spices Oil was derived from ben-nuts. There were also sesame, linseed and castor oils. Honey was available as a sweetener, and vinegar may have also been used. Seasonings included salt, juniper, aniseed, coriander, cumin, fennel, fenugreek, and poppyseed.

We also should understand the dismemberment of Africa and how that affected African peoples' cultural identity. CRITICAL REVIEW OF SCHOLARSHIP: I could answer framing question by pulling out points from Ngugi WA Thiong'o Something Torn and New and Gregg E. Carr's Towards an Intellectual History of Africana Studies: Genealogy and Normative Theory. Something Torn and New helped me understand the need to preserve our identity as Africans and not allow the Europeans to take away our cultural heritage and identity. Something Torn and New is a very thought-provoking book as it discusses in-depth the quest for African renaissance(rebirth). From the book Towards an Intellectual History of Africana Studies: Genealogy and Normative Theory, I understood how African people maintained their "self" throughout history despite the hardship that they been through. The book also made it clear that Africans will still face more hardship but it's only through unity that they will be able to win the fight against racism. Both books were very helpful in answering the framing question. Something torn and new made use of native stories to explain African experiences. Towards an Intellectual History of African Studies gave three major macro-episodic challenges face by Africans over the course of their encounter with the West which were helpful; however, I had difficulty understanding some concepts discussed in this book. DISCUSSION: We study African experiences because it applies to and affects everybody. To undertake the study of African experiences one must understand the dismemberment of African people from their origin and culture. From Something Torn and New, "The dismemberment of Africa occurred in two stages. During the first of these, the African personhood was divided into two halves: the continent and its diaspora." Dismemberment began in the colonial eras because of the need of slaves to work on land stolen from the native Americans and the Caribbean. Africans were colonized and taken away from their continent to work as slaves. Africans were also stripped off their memory. According to Dr. Carr "when someone's memory is cut off the notion of who they are is going to be informed by other people". The name of an object has everything to do with how it is identified, classified, and remembered. The memory of Africans was cut off by the oppressors by changing the names of Africans therefore c hanging their identities. African art works were stolen and taken to be stored in British museums; this is also to deprive Africans of their memory. Time and space also helps to understand the study of African experiences. The challenge of time and space is miseducation. For example, the challenge of time and space erased the genealogy of Phillis Wheatley as a Muslim. Her name was changed from Fatima to Phillis, after the name of the boat that brought her, and Wheatley after the name of her master. Her first two languages were Wolof and Arabic but she was made to learn new languages like English, Latin, Greek. From Something torn and New, "Africans, in the diaspora and on the continent, were soon to be the recipients of this linguistic logic of conquest, with two results: linguicide in the case of the diaspora and linguistic famine, or linguifam, on the continent". The forcing of Africans to learn and communicate in different languages other than their cultural language is Linguicide. But a situation where the older ones do not teach the younger ones the language of their origin, it is referred to as Linguifam. The challenge of time and space also creates blackness as the primary maker for power relationship. "African deep thought must now speak for itself. Rather than set up interview schedule containing the great issue of European Philosophical enquiry, African champions must break the chain that links African idea to European ideas and listen to the voice of the ancestors without European interpreters".
